The NRA Instructor Training Course helps you develop the additional KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ATTITUDE, and techniques needed to organize and teach courses in the NRA Basic Firearm Training Program.

Please note that effective July 1, 2018, the NRA Education and Training Division now requires that all Instructor Candidates must have completed the Basic Student Course in the shooting discipline that they wish to obtain Instructor certification.

This course is approximately ten (10) hours in duration IF the instructor candidate has completed the six (6) hour Basic Instructor Training (BIT) course.  Candidates must possess and demonstrate a solid background in firearm safety and shooting skills acquired through previous firearm training and/or previous shooting experience.  Instructor candidates must be intimately familiar with each action type in the discipline they wish to be certified.

The NRA’s Instructor Course objective is to teach you how to teach others in a specific discipline, and NOT meant to teach the instructor the basic skills of how to shoot.

Minimum Age Requirement
Certified Instructor: 21 years old
Assistant Instructor: 18 years old
Apprentice Instructor: 13 years old

Basic Instructor Training (BIT):  The BIT is approximately six (6) hours of instruction.  This course is not discipline-specific but is required to be taken by any student candidate wishing to become an NRA Instructor in any specific discipline. By utilizing the NRA Trainer’s Guide, instructor candidates will learn NRA policies and procedures, basic Public speaking skills, training methodology, use of a training team and training aids, organizing a course, building a budget, and finally preparing to teach.

NRA Rifle Instructor Course:  Instructor candidates must demonstrate organizational and teaching skills via participation in practical exercises during the course, and complete an instructor certification examination.  Instructor candidates will receive the NRA Trainer’s Guide, NRA Rifle Shooting Instructor Candidate Packet and NRA Basic Rifle Shooting course student packet.  Instructor candidates will utilize these materials during the in-person training.  Role-playing is a major part of NRA Rifle Instructor Course, and instructor candidates will take turns conducting portions of the course to other instructor candidates.

Instructor candidates will be assessed on their ability to handle a rifle(s) with confidence, use appropriate training aids, follow the lesson plans and meet all learning objectives while utilizing the teaching philosophies of the NRA.  Instructor candidates are tested on their knowledge, skills, and attitudes while instructing other instructor candidates.

Candidates must score a 90% or higher on the written examination.
